This mission sees you fighting against two Pigs who have four times your starting gold of 2000. You have limited supplies and an exposed position.
Extend your stockpile (3 squares) and site a granary, armoury, market and barracks. Place these buildings at the front of the keep (campfire side) for protection. Buy 50 stone and erect two round towers adjoining the rear of the keep. Put a ballista and brazier on each, place the engineers’ guild and recruit 4 engineers to man the ballistae.

Buy 10 bows, 5 crossbows and 5 leather armour and recruit these bowmen to man the towers. Site three woodcutters and put one quarry and three oxen at the stone deposits between you and Pig Duc Truffe (orange). Site the oxen nearer to the keep than the quarry. Place one hovel and site an iron mine in the north. Raise taxes to –4. Manually target your ballistae at the pigs’ catapults as they appear.
Fit one hops farm and a wheat farm in the northern arable land. Your spearmen can be targeted to destroy the pigs’ farms and iron mines to make room for your farms and iron mines in due course. They will be safe enough, as all the aggravation in this mission comes from the other direction (yellow Duke Pigsbury), the orange pig being so constrained that he is unable to site a barracks. Place a brewery and an inn when resources allow. Adjust taxes at this stage as popularity drops. Your Lord will be expected to handle any enemy macemen that make it to the keep. It’s about time that he earned his keep, to coin a phrase. A few fire ballistae placed near your towers will soon prove their worth.
Erect a hovel and place a fletcher and further iron mines as a priority. You can sell iron and stone and buy wood for a mill, three bakeries, more farms and weapons buildings of choice. If your quarry and oxen should prove to be easy targets, it’s no hardship at this stage to delete them.
With your economy now well established, you can raise taxes to –8 and build up an offensive army. I attacked with swordsmen and fire ballistae from the northern end of the orange Pig’s settlement, but I first sent in slaves to expose any hidden killing pits.
If required, a file save of the early part of this mission is available for download (look under Crusader Saved Games). It was played with the 1.1 patch installed and in accordance with this walkthrough.
