If you want to run Stronghold or Crusader on Linux (or anything else that has a WineX port), here's how... Not for the fient hearted!

Here's a whole new way to play Stronghold on just about any operating system that has a recent WineX port such as Linux and probably even Apple OS/X... Wine is a Windows emulator that runs on KDE and other GUI interfaces common to the linux/unix platforms.
We were searching the 'net for Stronghold information when we came across these two amazing articles. Unfortunately we are not allowed to reproduce them here on SHK so you'll have to visit the German site directly. As with all linux/unix techies, they don't care much for noobs, which is probably why everyone still uses Windows... Stronghold The Stronghold article is by far the most complete in terms of giving details of how to achieve this.

We used a CVS snapshot of WineX dated 17 April 2002 in the desktop configuration. Stronghold installation uses InstallShield which doesn't come with WineX as standard. For this reason, installation must be carried out manually!
Put the CD in and then copy the following files to your hard drive in a folder:
- data1.hdr
- data1.cab
- data2.cab
- Stronghold.exe
In order to be able to unpack the CAB archive files, one needs the InstallShield CAB Entpacker i6comp, which one can download here. In the downloaded archive you will find the executable file i6comp.exe - to extract the cab files (essentially installing the game) use the following command:
$ wine i6comp.exe x data1.cab && wine i6comp.exe x data2.cab && chmod a+rw r * && rm rf DATA *. * && mkdir
Note: If you forget to set the correct rights in the "Stronghold" folder the game will not run. You sould also ensure that there is a subfolder called "saves" if you want to be able to save your games.
You might need to install a NO CD Patch over the fresh installation to get everything to work. This does not seem to be necessary however if you are using Autofs which auto-mounts CD-Drives.
To launch the game, use the following command:
wine Stronghold.exe
The game runs then without any problems.
Known Problems Sometimes the videos cause problems - to solve this, delete the ".bik" files (you might be able to just delete the initial intro video) and the poblems should go away.
Stronghold Crusader The Crusader version of the article is far more basic so you'll have to read the Stronghold one first to get all the basics covered.

Stronghold Crusader (Stronghold 1.5) with the newest WineX (November 2002) from the CVS.
The installation was made under Windows, why one can unfortunately make no statement.
To start the game you need a NoCD Patch.
After its installation everything runs problem-free, with the exception of the mouse, which was not to be seen in the frame (video) mode.
After we changed then the pointer of mouse blindly on the standard MS pointer of mouse, it was problem-free.
In the window the game functioned immediately without problems with the KDE pointer of mouse.
System Specifications The installation procedures above were carried out on the following system:
- PIII 866Mhz
- 512MB RAM
- Radeon 7500
- SuSE 7,3 Kernel: 2.4.18 selfmade
- KDE 3,02
- XFree86 4.2
