1a. Story Design: People and Animal Names

1. Game Basics

English Language

Compatible with Stronghold 2

Stronghold 2 greatly extends the number of names used for people and animals.  The lists of those names are shown in this article - everything from peasants to rabbits!

Submitted by Aubergine, HicRic, WitchHazel.  All pictures by WitchHazel

All peasants and workers in the game derive their name from the following three lists.  Their first name comes from either the list of female or male names (depending on their gender) and their surname comes from the third list of surnames.

It should be noted that we've not put the names in to alphabetical order.  We believe that the game simply cycles through these lists in order, hence the list being in a random order to give the effect of random name choices in the game.  The differing lengths of the lists will ensure that they don't all go back to the beginning at the same time in order to ensure a good mix of first names versus surnames.

Animal Names

Now we move on to the animals in the game. To see the name of an animal, simply click on it - however, some animals are very difficult to click on (eg. whales) and others are impossible to click on (eg. seagulls).

Stronghold 2 introduces loads of new animals and WitchHazel has kindly taken pictures of all of them - click here to see her gallery (where you can see the full size images by clicking on the thumbnails).

Bears

Bears are generally placed on the map by map designers.  They usually keep out of your way but if your civilians or military units get to close to them they will attack.  However, sometimes they will stray in to your estates and go on a rampage...

  • Paddington
  • Pooh
  • Yogi
  • Baloo

Chickens

Chickens arrive on your map when a granary is placed.  They don't serve any real purpose in the game other than looking amusing as they strut around your map.

  • Clucky
  • Clacky
  • Squarker
  • Henny

Cows

Cows arrive when you place dairy farms and are used to create cheese as well as leather for use by the tanner.

  • Buttercup
  • Daisy
  • Bessy
  • Clover

Crows

Crows are placed on maps my map designers.  They do not serve any purpose in the game other than to make things look more realistic.

We do not yet know if crows have names as we can't click on them. Possible names are listed at the bottom of this page.

Deer

Deer are placed on the map by map designers and are a good source of food (meat) if you have hunters.

  • Bambi
  • Rudolph
  • Donner
  • Blitzen

Hunters' Dogs

Whenever you place a Hunters' Post, a dog will appear on the map to help the hunter who works there.  If the hunter kills any animals other than deer, the dog will be responsible for fetching the animal and taking it to the granary.

  • Sir Barkalot
  • Rover
  • Tiddles
  • Snowy

Dolphins

Dolphins are placed on the map by map designers and are just eye-candy to make the sea look more interesting.

  • Flipper

Eels

Eels arrive on the map when you place an eel pond and they are later used to gain honor when your Lord hosts a feast.

We are not 100% sure of Eel names, but here is our best guess:

  • Slippery
  • Wriggler
  • Jelly

Falcons

Falcons arrive on your map when you place a Falconers' Post.  They are used to kill rats that would otherwise cause disease in your estates.  As far as we know, there is no way to click on a falcon.

Without being able to click on them, we can only guess that they all share the same name:

  • Hawkeye

Foxes

Foxes are placed on the map by map designers and they cause havoc killing livestock and other animals as well as occasionally attacking your civilians, etc.

  • Stalker
  • Foxy
  • Red
  • Edward
  • Crafty

Geese

Geese arrive on the map when you place an Eel Pond and are later used to gain honor when your Lord hosts a feast.

  • Goldy
  • Lucy
  • Quacker

Herons

Herrons are placed on the map by map designers.  They live in marshland and generally serve no purpose in the game.

We've not been able to work out their names. Possible names are listed at the bottom of this page.

Horses

Horses arrive on the map when you place a stables and are later used as steeds for knights and the Lord.  You also get horses for troops such as horse archers and light cavalry, and civilian work horses for carters and woodcutters.

We are not sure if the following names are also used for the horses used by carters and woodcutters.

  • Mr Ed
  • Neddy
  • Adams
  • Dobbin
  • Red Rum
  • Silver
  • Shergar
  • Lightning

Pheasants

Pheasants arrive on the map in two ways - either the map designer places them or they automatically appear when hunters' posts are placed to provide a limitless source of meat.  The hunters shoots them with arrows and then their dogs collect them and take them to the granary.

Pheasants can't be clicked on so we are not 100% sure of their names, but we assume them to be:

  • Plucky
  • Flapper

Pigs

Pigs arrive on the map when you palce a Pig Farm and they are later used to gain honor when the Lord hosts a feast.

  • Porker
  • Pepper
  • Mucky
  • Babe

Quarry Oxen

Oxen appear when you place an Ox Tether on your map.  They are used to transport iron and stone to a stockpile.

  • Old Beefy
  • Big Jim
  • Churchill
  • Tiny

Rabbits

Rabbits are placed on the map by the map designer and have a habbit of destroying your crops such as wheat and hops (and possibly also vegetables?).  Hunters will kill them and then their dogs will collect them and take them to the granary as meat.

  • Hopper
  • Thumper
  • Floppsy
  • Bright Eyes

Rats

Rats are placed on the map either by the map designer or as a result of your population size growing (depending on game type and settings).  They cause disease and reduce popularity unless your falcons catch them first.

  • Ratty
  • Roland
  • De Puce
  • Cheeky

Seagulls

Seagulls are placed on the map by the map designer.  They are purely aesthetic and serve no purpose in the game.

They can't be clicked on so we don't yet know what their names are. Possible names are listed at the bottom of this page.

Sheep

Sheep arrive on the map when you place a Sheep Farm and their wool is used by the Lady to make dresses for the dance in order to gain honor.

  • Fluffy
  • Minty
  • Tender
  • Shaggy

War Dogs

War dogs arrive when you placed caged war dogs on your map.  The dogs appear to be dobermans and are pretty nasty when enemy troops cross their path!

  • Gnasher
  • Biter
  • Bonehead
  • Butch

Whales

Whales are placed in the sea by map designers - they serve no purpose in the game other than to make the sea more interesting.

To click on a whale, you need to target the black splodge that appears in front of them from time to time.

  • Blubber
  • Moby

Wolves

Wolves are put on the map by map designers - they kill animals and people alike and generally cause havoc, especially in village estates.

  • Slasher
  • Killer
  • Fang
  • Red Claw

The Missing Few

From the original list of names we extracted from the game, there were several left over once we'd compiled the list above that just didn't seem to fit anywhere.

If anyone knows what the following names relate to (and it's not people so we assume it must be animals), please post a comment below.

  • Dimwit
  • Dozy
  • Tim
  • Cyril

So, now we've armed you with all these names, you can take them in to account when writing your scenarios, stories and map descriptions.  Have fun!

Note: Goldy is a goose, not a falcon!
