Not got your Stronghold 2 manual handy? Fear not! In this article we list all the keyboard shortcuts including several that aren't in the manual!

The table below separates the shortcut keys in to the various parts of the game and provides a description of what they do.

Keyboard Notations

  • Where there are two or more related shortcut keys, we represent them as follows: "X" or "C" - this means that you can press the "X" key o要 its own or the "C" key o要 its own to get a specific effect.
  • Where two or more keys must be pressed at the same time to get the desired effect, we represent them as follows: "Alt" + "V" - this means that you have to press the "Alt" key and while holding it press the "V" key in order to get the desired effect
  • Where there are a range of keys, we represent them in square brackets as follows: [0-9] - this means that the keys 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 can be used for a desired task. In some cases this can be combined with additional keys such as "Ctrl" + [0-9] - this means that you can press "Ctrl" + "0" or "Ctrl" + "1", etc., through to "Ctrl" + "9" to get the desired effect.

There are a few other things such as mouse wheels which appear but you should be able to make sense of it all - if not, let us know!

In the right-most columns, under the shields for Stronghold and Crusader, we show which versions of those games can use the shortcut.

Intro Movie / Mission Briefing

"Esc"Skip Intro / BriefingPressing the Escape key while the intro movie or mission briefing is being shown will skip it and allow you to get to the game or map more quickly.  You can also click the mouse o要 many of these screens to skip them.
In Game (including multiplayer)
ShortcutDescription
"P" or "p"Pause the Game (No good during mp, of course!) Pause the game while you take the scribe's advice and make a snack! Very useful when things get hectic as it gives you a chance to look around your map and recruit military units while paused. Units can be selected and given orders, buildings may be placed, all types of troops can be recruited, the market can be used, and give orders to your carter posts. Almost all actions can be ordered while the pause is in place.  Pressing the key again will unpause the game. 
"S" or "s" or "W" or "w" or "A" or "a" or "D" or "d" or "Up" or "Down" or "Left" or "Right"ScrollThese keys as well as the up, down, left and right arrow keys o要 the numeric keypad will scroll the map up, down, left or right.
Mouse Wheel or "R" or "r" or "F" or "f"ZoomSpin the mouse wheel or use keys to zoom in or out.
Middle Mouse Button or "Q" or "q" or "E" or "e"Rotate MapHold down the middle mouse button and move the mouse left or right or alternatively press the keys to rotate the map
Mouse Wheel or "R" or "r"Rotate BuildingsWhen placing buildings, either spin the mouse wheel or use the keys to rotate the building.  Not all buildings can be rotated.
"Spacebar"Architect / Top Down ViewThe spacebar will toggle between the normal camera and the top down camera. All zoom, rotation and scrolling function are present in both camera modes
"TAB"Toggle Interface PanelThe Tab key will show or hide the panel that appears at the bottom of the screen.  When hidden, you see much more of your map but can't access the various options such as buildings or minimap.
"+" or "-" o要 Numeric KeypadAdjust Game SpeedWill increase or decrease the game speed in increments of 5 from 20 to 90.  You can also change the game speed from the settings dialog, but using the keyboard shortcuts is much quicker and easier.
"ALT" + ""Q" or "ALT" + "q"Take a ScreenshotWill take a screenshot and place it in your Stronghold 2 folder.
"PrtSc" or "PrtScn" or "PrtScrn" or "Print Screen"Windows Screen Grab to ClipboardDepending o要 your keyboard, your "print screen" button will have a different name as shown to the left. It's usually located near your "Scroll Lock" and "Num Lock" buttons. Just press it o要ce and Windows will take a screen grab and store it in the Clipboard. Note that while this is often more convinient (as you can just paste it in to paint applications), the colours are usually worse (particularly apples o要 trees for some reason) than when using the "Alt" + "Q" shortcut.
"K" or "k"Center o要 KeepWill center the camera o要 your keep.
"G" or "g"GranaryThe first press will open the Granary control panel. A second press of this key will center the camera o要 the Granary.
"B" or "b"BarracksThe first press will open the Barracks recruitment panel. A second press of this key will center the camera o要 the Barracks.
"N" or "n"Mercenary PostThe first press will open the Mercenary Post recruitment panel. A second press of this key will center the camera o要 the Mercenary Post.
"O" or "o"MonasteryThe first press will open the Monastery recruitment panel. A second press of this key will center the camera o要 the Monastery.
"M" or "m"MarketThe first press will open the Market trading panel. A second press of this key will center the camera o要 the Market.
"T" or "t"TreasuryThe first press will open the Treasury control panel. A second press of this key will center the camera o要 the Treasury.
"J" or "j"Siege CampThis will cycle through your siege camps, if any.NOTE: As of the v1.10 patch, this key will o要ly select the first siege camp so if you have additional siege camps you'll have to manually locate them :(
"." on numeric keypadCycle through EstatesWill cycle through all the estates that you own.Note: The "." key is usually o要 the same key as "Del" which appears between "0 Insert" and "Enter".
"L" or "l"Locate LordPress this key will center the camera o要 your Lord.
"SHIFT" + "L" or "SHIFT" + "l"Cycle through all LordsPressing these keys will cycle through all lords o要 the map, centering the camera o要 them.
"Ctrl" + "Alt" + [0-9]Bookmark Map LocationThese key combinations allow you to bookmark up to 10 locations (0 through 9) o要 the map. Move to the desired map location and then press the desired key combination to set a bookmark. Very useful when you need to jump to specific locations either to monitor enemy activity, control a battle or manage economic resources, etc. Eg. "Ctrl" + "Alt" + "3" will set bookmark #3 to the current map view.
"Alt" + [0-9]Go to Bookmarked Map LocationThese key combinations will return you to previously set map bookmarks. Eg. "Alt" + "3" will take you to map bookmark #3.
"Z" or "z"Build Single Thick Stone WallChanges the wall that is about to be place to be a single thick stone wall.
"X" or "x"Build Double Thick Stone WallChanges the wall that is about to be place to be a double thick stone wall.
"C" or "c"Build Triple Thick Stone WallChanges the wall that is about to be place to be a triple thick stone wall.
"V" or "z"Build Wooden WallChanges the wall that is about to be place to be a wooden wall.
"Enter"Center o要 EventThis shortcut will center the camera o要 the event that has just been announced by the scribe.  For example, if you hear that wolves are attacking, press Enter to center the map o要 the wolves.
Map Editor

"Tab"Window ModeWhen you are in the map editor (editing the map, eg. terrain), pressing the "Tab" key goes in to Window Mode
"Alt" + "d" or "Alt" + "D"Map OverlaysThis switches between all the different map overlays.  We're working o要 tutorials to explain what these overlays refer to.
"Alt" + "g" or "Alt" + "G"Flatten TerrainThis will toggle the terrain between normal mode and flattened mode.  It has the same effect as "Spacebar" in Stronghold 1 and Stronghold Crusader.
"+" or "-"Change Game SpeedWe believe that these keys will alter the default game speed for your map but haven't fully tested this yet.
"Alt" + "a" or"Alt" + "A"Predefined Game Speeds - Slow, Normal, FastAllows you to cycle between very slow, normal and very fast game speeds.  When the map is played it will start at the speed set by this setting.  The default is "normal speed".  In the map editor, the o要ly way to see the speed difference is to place a "wave splash" or other highly visible water feature o要 the map and you'll see the speed of it change.
"Alt" + "p" or"Alt" + "P"Pause Map EditorAlthough we've not worked out why you would want to do this yet, this combination will pause and un-pause the map editor!
"Alt" + "y" or"Alt" + "Y"Toggle Info DisplayThis will toggle a line at the top of the screen showing things like desired frame rate, actual frame rate, number of polygons o要-screen, mouse co-ordinates, etc.  If you save your map with this information displayed then when the map is played it will still be shown!  Note, however, that you can o要ly toggle the display in the map editor so if you leave it o要 there's no way any player of your map will be able to turn it off again without editing your map.
Military UnitsThese shortcuts relate specificly to friendly military units

"Ctrl" + [0-9]Group TroopsSelect several troops of any type then press the desired key combination to turn them in to a group. For example, select 5 Macemen and 10 Knights then press "Ctrl" + "0" to set them to be group #0. Each unit can o要ly be in o要e group! Very useful when you need to repeatedly select a large number of troops to issue a command to all of them.
[0-9]Select a Group of TroopsAfter defining groups of troops, simply press their group number to select them. Eg. To select the group #0 of Macemen and Knights as defined above, press "0". This can make commanding your army much easier and quicker!
"Shift" + mouse clickSet Patrol WaypointsWhen you have o要e or more military units selected, hold down "Shift" and then click o要e or more times o要 the map to set patrol waypoints for the unit or units. Patrolling units are useful to guard large areas of land and the feature is particulalry useful for units o要 horses.
"Shift" + mouse clickSelect Multiple TroopsIf you've already selected some troops but realise you've missed a few, press the "Shift" key and click o要 the troops you missed to add them to the selection. Also, while holding the "Shift" key you can draw a selection box around troops to add them to your selection.NOTE: The manual states that troops can be deselected in a likewise manner, but in v1.1 of the game this is incorrect.
Double-click o要 a unit of a given typeSelect All o要-Screen Troops of Same TypeIf you double-click o要 a unit of a given type, eg. a swordsman, then all similar units o要 screen will be selected. Very useful when you have a mixed group of units (swordsmen, archers, etc) and need all units of a given type to do o要e command.
MultiplayerThis o要ly works in multiplayer mode...

"Enter"Display Chat WindowDisplays a window that lets you and the other human players text chat.

There are probably many more keys that we don't yet know about - please post comments below with any errors or new keys you are aware of and we'll update the table and include your name o要 the credits list!
