Wool and Cloth, introduced in Stronghold 2, are used to make dresses for medieval dances in the Keep in order to gain honor. This tutorial covers all aspects of production including ranks, buildings, job roles, resources as well as providing a detailed production and use flowchart followed by hints and tips...

Ranks

Ranks usually only relate to Kingmaker maps, but some custom map develppers may incorporate them in to other types of map.  They affect which buildings you can place:

Rank

Notes

Freeman

You can place a stockpile and market, which will allow you to buy and sell wool and cloth (useful when trading with other estates).

Yeoman

You can place the Lords' Kitchen, which provides the page boys who take cloth to the Ladys' bedchamber (Solar) once you are a Knight.

Knight

You can place sheep farms and weavers' workshops in order to start producing your own wool and cloth. You can place a Solar where your Lady will use cloth to make dresses for the dance.

Baron

You can place a carters' post and start transferring wool and cloth between estates.

Buildings / Estates

The following buildings and estates are linked to wool and cloth, their production and consumption, trading and transportation:

Name

Notes

Sheep Farm

This building requires a shepard (sheep farmer) who sheers his sheep occasionally to produce wool.

Weavers' Workshop

This building requires a weaver (cloth maker) and is used to convert wool in to cloth.

Stockpile

This unmanned building is used to store wool and cloth until they are used (wool by the Weaver, cloth by the Lady), transported to other estates or sold at the market.

Lords' Kitchen

The page boys from the kitchen deliver cloth to the Solar.

Ladys' Bedchamber
(Solar)

The Lady lives in this building. She consumes cloth to make dresses which are then stored in the Solar until the dance.

Keep

This building is where the Lord lives and it provides the setting for your medieval dances which produce honor.

Market

This building allows you to buy and sell wool and cloth in exchange for gold.

Carters' Post

This building requires a carter and is used to transfer goods between estates.

Village Estates

Some maps contain an estate that produces wool and cloth.

Roles

The following people play a role in the produciton, consumption, trading and transportation of wool and cloth:

Notes

Wool

Wool is created by the shepard at the sheep farm and is consumed by the weavers' workshop in order to produce cloth. Wool may also be transferred between estates or bought and sold at the market.

Cloth

Cloth is taken to the stockpile and later delivered (by page boys) to the Lady in her Solar. Cloth may also be transferred between estates or bought and sold at the market.

Dresses

Dresses are stored at the Solar and 4 are used for each medieval dance held at the Keep.

Gold

Gold is exchanged whenever you buy or sell wool and cloth at the market.

Honor

200 honor is generated when you host a medieval dance at the Keep and is used for promotions, troop recruitment and purchasing estates.

Flowchart

This flowchart shows how wool and cloth is produced and used as well as traded and transported. Buildings are shown with their related drawing and the rank required to build them in Kingmaker maps:

Sheep Barbers' Shop!

Now, you might expect that when it's time to give the sheep a hair cut, the shepard would gather the flock in to his shed and trim them all at the same time?  Not so!

The shepard waits at his little shed with the clippers and the sheep come to him, one by one!  After a sheep has it's wool cut off, it goes and waits patiently outside the shed (you can even see the marks on the sheep left by the sheering process!) and another sheep comes in from the fields for it's haircut!  once they are all trimmed, they wander back to the fields and hills.  If only real sheep were so co-operative!

Hints and Tips

Sheep Farms should be placed as close to the stockpile as possible to reduce the amount of time it takes for the shepard to deliver it.

Weavers' workshops should be placed relatively close to the stockpile to reduce the amount of time it takes for the weaver to collect wool and deliver cloth.

Ideally, find a big open space and place a stockpile in it and then place sheep farms on one side and weavers' workshops on the other side - this will optimise the whole process!

On Kingmaker maps, you can start producing wool and cloth as soon as you become a Knight. You can either sell them for gold (8 gold for wool and 10 gold for cloth) or build a Lords' kitchen and solar to start producing dresses for the dance.

The Lady needs to complete 4 dresses before a dance will be held. The dance will gain you 200 honor!

If you don't have enough room to place sheep farms and weavers' workshops, consider buying wool for 15 gold and/or cloth for 20 gold at the market. The honor that can be gained from the dance can make all the difference to your game!

Some maps will have a village estate that produces wool and cloth. Buy or capture the estates then use carters' posts to transfer goods to your own estate where you can either sell them or use them to make dresses.

You can also place sheep farms and weavers' workshops in to estates that don't have them and as long as those estates have enough peasants they will start to produce wool and cloth! You can then use the carters' post to bring the resources to your main castle estate if desired.
